Fashion Wire Daily - Fashion Wire Daily - Reykjavik - For the first-time traveler to the nation whose name means, no, not land of ice but island, Iceland is a place of many astonishments. The first of these come, always, on the lengthy drive from Keflavik Airport into Reykjavik, as one’s eyes devour a landscape that must, inevitably, be described as “lunar.” Empty fields of volcanic rock stretch ruddily out towards the water and in towards - nothing. Nothing at all except, perhaps, a jet of opaque mist rising up to the sky to kiss a low-flying cloud: A geyser, the driver will explain, his accent swallowing the syllables. And then again there’s silence, to match the view going on and on and on, a vista of land and water and sky unbroken by hints of even vegetable life; it’s like staring out the window at the day the Earth was born, or, if one is in an apocalyptic mood, the day it died. Time has no purchase here.
